Around the House – Chalk

Everybody has their own style. One of my favorite things to do is create cards with someone specific in mind. Some of my co-workers and I sat down to think about a card for a colleague the other day. After reminiscing over several inside jokes we decided to go with a graffiti theme. My wheels in my brain started to spin with the excitement of doing something entirely different from my typical style.

My final vision (shown below) ended up being quite simple to the eye, but much more complicated in terms of actual construction. I wanted to create graffiti lettering that really popped up off the paper, and not just by the use of dimensional adhesives. First, I began with the lettering. I created an SVG file using a graffiti font I found online. The file had two layers: the black background and the neon green foreground. Then I printed the “Happy” and “Birthday” parts directly onto the card. After mounting the green on the black, I used dimensional adhesive to apply the “Thuggin” cut out to the card.

After looking at the product, I wanted to add another element to make the graffiti pop out. So I grabbed some black chalk that I had and using a makeup applicator, I applied the chalk along the outline of the graffiti on the bottom side. This created almost a shadowed effect that was perfect for my card.

The final piece was a small die cut of a crushed spray can and some more chalk for shadowing. Since this card was made for a male, I wanted to keep it simple and on theme and I was just thrilled with the final product. Isn’t it amazing what you can do with the things lying around your house? Around the House – Gift Bag

Yesterday we hosted a baby shower for long-time BeaOriginal supporter Donya. At the end of the event there were gift bags strewn about the living room. One gift bag had been taped, and when opened, torn. The bag was rendered ‘unusable’ and destined for the trash can when I thought, wait a minute! There, is a great Around the House idea!

As you can see below the bag had a cute phrase and some pictures of baby clothes. All I did was take some scissors and cut the bag to include one of the pieces of clothing and the end of the phrase that said “little clothes.” Using a paper trimmer I cut the edges symmetrically and then glued a brown background onto the bag. Another two layers created the look seen below. One trip around the sewing machine and this card is ready to go. Thanks for reading today.

Around the House – Fabric Scraps

I had some small fabric scraps left over from a recent project. I wanted to use them, but they were really too small to incorporate into another fabric project. Instead I decided to use them on a card. The base of the banner triangles are 1.25″ with the point at .75″. Simply cut the triangles out of the fabric using sharp scissors and then iron the fabric triangles flat. Use double stick tape to hold the triangles in place and stitch along the top to emulate a banner’s string. A simple stamped sentiment and you have a card worth of a celebration!

BeaInspired – Chico Air Show

Yesterday Jeff took me to the Chico Air Show, a first for me after living here for almost ten years. He has a fascination for airplanes so it was fun to watch him in awe of these magnificent machines. It was a great family fun day. There were tons of planes to look at including ones with Jelly Belly’s painted on the sides, and a shark face painted on the front! There were vendors, restaurants, and other booths to visit. And there was an Air Force cargo plane to explore!

I recently bought a new ‘plane’ stamp and thought that it would be perfect for a card inspired by my day at the air show. This card is very simple and took just ten minutes to create. The stamp is from Imaginisce and the loopty-loop was hand drawn. When adding hand drawn features I always sketch with pencil first, then go over with the marker, at the end don’t forget to erase the pencil markings. Thanks for reading!

Around the House 15.0 – Six Pack Holder

Sierra Nevada beer is brewed right here in Chico, California. They recently began bottling a hometown favorite, Crystal Wheat, and offering it just in Chico. The beer has been renamed Old Chico Crystal Wheat and comes with a redesigned label as well. When the news spread that Sierra Nevada would be offering Crystal Wheat bottled, some of my family picked up a few six packs for a family get-together.

Once I saw the design, I knew I could come up with some way to incorporate the awesome new brand label into a fun card. This card is super easy and can be remade with your favorite beer! The only additions I made to this card are the four photo corners (found at Michaels Arts and Crafts) and a hemp bow. This card is absolutely perfect for the man in your life; whether it be husband, brother, father, or grandfather. Any beer lover would be happy to receive one of these simple, yet awesome cards.
